25 October 2022: We’re celebrating World Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Day

There are approximately one million cases of spina bifida and hydrocephalus worldwide every year. Despite the continuous advances in medicine, comparatively little is known about these congenital disabilities, which cannot be cured. The goal of World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day (WSBHD) is to raise awareness and understanding of the disease as well as to promote the rights of persons living with these conditions.

World Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Day

World Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Day was initiated by the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in 2011, and every year there is a different theme. This year´s theme is “elevate your voice”.

When a child is born with spina bifida, it needs surgery as soon as possible to close the hole in its back. Despite the operation, there is still no cure for spina bifida, and the children have to deal with their disability for the rest of their lives.

The most common consequences of spina bifida are a lack of control over the bladder, bowels and legs. The result is the need for a continence management for those affected and their families. This is one reason why this topic is important for us and close to our hearts.

Teleflex Urology Care believes in the vision of the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus for a society that guarantees the human rights of children and adults with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, and celebrates their contributions in all areas of life, while guaranteeing equity at all levels.

For this year´s WSBHD, the International Federation has arranged a talent show and put together videos of testimonials. For more information please visit:
