World Spinal Cord Injury Day 2023

The International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) designated September 5th as World Spinal Cord Injury Day in 2016. Since then, it has been celebrated every year using different slogans and themes in order to raise awareness and highlight the key issues of concern for individuals living with a spinal cord injury. This year´s theme will be: Access to SCI services; a life less complicated.

World Spinal Cord Injury Day 2023

Celebrate World Spinal Cord Injury Day
A spinal cord injury can be a life-changing event that affects individuals physically, emotionally and socially. The impact on people’s lives can be overwhelming and it can take time for them to adjust to their new reality. For many, the injury can lead to them losing independence in many areas, such as employment or financial stability. However, with the support of their families and healthcare professionals, individuals can learn to adapt and thrive despite their injury.

This international day serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by individuals with spinal cord injury, but also highlights the incredible resilience and determination they possess. By raising awareness and eradicating social stigma, we can create a more inclusive and supportive society for those living with this condition. It’s also crucial to continue to advance treatment options and technologies in order to improve quality of life and bring about a cure. While there is still much work to be done, World Spinal Cord Injury Day 2023 is a reminder of how far we have come and an inspiration to do more and to continue working towards a brighter future for all.

Raising awareness and removing social stigma
To improve the lives of those affected, it is crucial to raise awareness of spinal cord injury and eliminate social stigma. Unfortunately, there are still many misconceptions about spinal cord injury in society, resulting in discrimination and isolation. It’s essential to educate the public about the challenges that people with a spinal cord injury face on a daily basis. By raising awareness, we can also promote greater inclusion and participation of people with spinal cord injury in all aspects of society, from education and employment to sporting activities.

This year`s theme: Access to SCI services; a life less complicated
Access to services for people with spinal cord injury and their families is vital. However, accessing these services can be very complicated due to a number of factors, such as a lack of available resources or lack of knowledge about the services available, as well as financial constraints. All this can make life unnecessarily complicated, adding even more challenges to an already difficult situation.

The goal of the International Spinal Cord Society is to work towards improving access to services for people with spinal cord injury, to raise awareness of the services available and to remove any barriers that prevent individuals from accessing these services.
