25 October 2024: World Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Day
The World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day, established by the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (IFSBH) in 2011, is a day to raise awareness, promote understanding, and advocate for the rights of individuals with these conditions. The theme for 2024, “Bridging Gaps Together”, calls on all of us to join in creating a more inclusive world for everyone affected by Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.
Understanding Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SBH)
Spina Bifida occurs when the spine doesn’t develop properly in the womb, leading to physical and sometimes cognitive challenges. Hydrocephalus, often occurring alongside Spina Bifida, is a condition where excess fluid builds up in the brain, causing pressure and potentially leading to developmental and health issues. Both conditions have a profound impact on the lives of those affected and require lifelong care.
While medical advancements have improved treatment, there’s still a long way to go in ensuring that everyone has access to the care they need. One of the common consequences of Spina Bifida is a lack of control over the bladder, bowels and legs. This results in the need for continence management for those affected and their families
Bridging Gaps Together: The Theme for 2024
This year’s theme, “Bridging Gaps Together”, focuses on breaking down the barriers that prevent individuals with SBH from fully participating in society. Whether it is ensuring access to quality healthcare, creating inclusive educational environments, or promoting employment opportunities, there are many ways to bridge these gaps and remove stigmas, discrimination and a lack of awareness.
The vision of IFSBH is to create an inclusive society that ensures the human rights of persons with SBH are respected and the contributions of these persons are celebrated across all aspects of life.
