Teleflex Urology Care: What causes the urinary system to malfunction?
What happens when we feel the need to empty our bladder? What are the reasons why the bladder may not be able to store or empty urine? Find out more about voiding dysfunction and why this occurs.
There are multiple different reasons why the bladder may not be able to store or empty urine. In most cases, this happens when the urinary system is impaired due to illness, injury or aging.
Generally, we empty our bladder several times a day. In some conditions, the nerve impulses to the brain do not work or are damaged, which means that we cannot control the bladder. When the process of emptying the bladder does not work properly, we call this “voiding dysfunction”.
In neurogenic voiding dysfunction, the nerve messages between the bladder and the brain are impaired or completely interrupted. Since the information is not being properly transmitted to the brain, the brain is no longer able to control the bladder muscle and the sphincter.
If you are diagnosed with voiding dysfunction, your doctor will often recommend intermittent catheterisation.
