World Spinal Cord Injury Day 2024: “End Violence – Protect Spinal Cord”

International days are powerful tools to raise public awareness and remind authorities of specific issues of concern. Spinal Cord Injury Day (SCI Day) is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by individuals living with spinal cord injuries and a valuable opportunity to emphasise commitment to prevention and better care. Since 2016, the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) has dedicated September 5th to highlight SCI Day, highlighting the most pressing issues for people with spinal cord injuries. SCI Day aspires to communicate that a spinal cord injury means far more than only being unable to walk. SCI individuals deal with psychological, social and work-related problems as well.

This year’s theme, “End Violence – Protect Spinal Cord,” underscores the urgent need to address violence as a preventable cause of spinal cord injuries. It is a call to action to raise awareness, promote prevention, and support those affected by SCI.

Understanding Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries are life-altering, often resulting in significant physical, emotional, and financial burdens. When the spinal cord is damaged, it can lead to partial or complete loss of motor and sensory functions below the level of injury. It can happen to anyone, and, for a variety of reasons, including: Accidents and Falls, Diseases, and or Violence.

The 2024 Theme: “End Violence – Protect Spinal Cord”

This year’s theme emphasises the importance of preventing violence to protect spinal cord health. By shining a light on violence-related SCIs, the aim is to raise awareness and inspire collective action. Together we can promote the prevention of violence that causes injury, raise awareness and ensure necessary measures are implemented.

Make sure you know what to do if you suffer or you suspect someone has suffered a spinal cord injury.

Celebrating Progress and Advocating for Change

World Spinal Cord Injury Day is a time to celebrate the resilience and progress of the SCI community while advocating for continued efforts to prevent these injuries. By raising awareness and promoting preventive measures, we can work towards a future where spinal cord injuries are rare, and those affected receive the best possible care and support.
