Kidney Health Awareness Month: The Importance of Intermittent Catheterisation

This year World Kidney Day is on Thursday the 13th of March. This year’s theme is: Are Your Kidneys OK? Detect early, protect kidney health. Chronic kidney disease is estimated to affect approximately 850 million people worldwide*. Individuals managing neurogenic bladder conditions may benefit from access to information, education, and support. Raising awareness and promoting best practices can help individuals make informed decisions about their health.

Kidney Health and Intermittent Catheterisation:

Kidneys filter waste and excess fluids from the blood, which are then expelled through the urinary system. Impaired kidney function can lead to complications and or blockages in the bladder and urinary tract. For people with neurogenic bladder dysfunction, intermittent self-catheterisation can help to ensure the bladder is emptied completely and regularly, which may help to protect the kidneys.

Tips for Maintaining Healthy Kidneys

  1. Be active. Regular physical activities can help to maintain an ideal body weight, reduce blood pressure, and reduce the risk of Chronic Kidney Disease. Teleflex supports active living, and through various initiatives, you may find support groups or new hobbies in your area.
  2. Maintain a healthy diet. Reducing sodium intake and consuming antioxidant-rich food can help to reduce blood pressure and prevent diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions associated with Chronic Kidney Disease. **
  3. Ensure appropriate fluid intake. The right level of fluid intake for any individual depends on many factors, including exercise, climate, and health conditions. Consult your doctor on the appropriate fluid intake for your condition and try to make sure your body gets the right amount of fluids.
  4. Practice proper catheterisation techniques. If you are using intermittent self-catheterisation, prepare in advance and ensure you have all the materials you need, using aseptic techniques. Make sure there is no residual urine and the bladder is appropriately drained.
